Some watches run off battery, some motion (or manual winding), and others light.
Quartz watches are the most common in the market. The benefit of a battery operated watch is that there is little that can go wrong and they are extremely accurate. Usually a battery every 2-3 years is all that is needed. Be mindful that when a battery is replaced it’s important that the rubber gaskets are evaluated, cleaned of debris, and lubricated- this keeps your watch running strong and free of moisture.
However, after decades of use it’s not uncommon for some of the small moving parts to become slowed by small debris and old oils- A quartz movement cleaning can be performed and it generally drives pretty good results.
Sadly, battery operated watches aren’t designed for big watch repairs as most of the time they are somewhat disposable- There is only so much that can be done before you just replace the movement or toss the watch and buy another.
Automatic watches are driven by motion (some manual wind)- Automatic watch are very common in most high end watches- Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Panerai, ETC. There are LOTS of small moving parts in automatic watches. During the automatic watch service all parts are disassembled, inspected, cleaned, oiled, reassembled, and time regulated. Automatic services range from $300-$500 depending on model and whether parts are needing replacement. It is recommended that you service any automatic time piece every 3-5 years or whenever it starts to lose time.
Everything that is mentioned above also applies to wind up pocket watches.
The market is flooded with replica watches (knock off’s)- be aware that if you are servicing a replica watch that it may be difficult to get 100% as they’re made with lower quality parts.
Light Powered Watches (Citizen Watches, Seiko Watches):
Light powered watches like Citizen watch Eco-Drive require the least maintenance which is a good thing as the movements are very complex and difficult to work on. They are driven by solar like panels and would take an MIT degree to do any watch repair if broken! Most manufactures recommend a daily dose of sunlight (Citizen watches can charge with artificial lighting too) and that’s about it.
Each solar powered watch has a capacitor that is constantly being charged when used- some of Citizen watch capacitors are capable storing energy for up to two years!
It’s common that about 10-15 years into the life of the watch that the watch capacitor will need to be replaced- this is a service that can be performed (generally) for about $60.
Regardless of the watch that’s in need of watch repair we are fully equipped to work on your timepiece — Timex to Rolex and everything in between we’ve got you covered!
